WhatsApp May Soon Introduce ‘Read and Disappear’ Messages for Extra Privacy

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a brand-new privacy feature that could completely change the way disappearing messages work on the platform. The upcoming update, currently spotted in beta testing, may allow chats to automatically vanish shortly after the recipient reads them, making conversations feel more temporary and secure than ever before.

According to recent reports, the new feature is being tested in the iOS beta version of WhatsApp and could later expand to Android devices as well. If introduced publicly, it may become one of the platform’s biggest privacy-focused upgrades in recent years.

WhatsApp Working on a More Advanced Disappearing Messages System

At present, WhatsApp already offers disappearing messages with preset timers such as 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days. However, the new “After Reading” feature is expected to work differently.

Instead of starting the countdown immediately after a message is sent, the timer would reportedly begin only after the recipient opens and reads the message. This means a message could remain untouched in the chat for hours or even days, but the deletion countdown would activate only once it is viewed.

This new system is designed to make chats feel closer to real-life conversations where words disappear after being heard rather than expiring based on a fixed schedule.

Feature Spotted in WhatsApp Beta for iPhone

The feature was reportedly discovered in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.19.10.72 through Apple’s TestFlight program. Early testing suggests that Meta-owned WhatsApp is actively experimenting with the privacy tool before rolling it out to more users globally.

Reports also indicate that Android beta builds have shown signs of the same feature, hinting at a cross-platform launch in the future.

How the ‘After Reading’ Feature Could Work

WhatsApp is expected to provide multiple timer options for the new disappearing system. Users may get choices such as:

  • 5 minutes after reading
  • 1 hour after reading
  • 12 hours after reading

The system may behave differently for senders and recipients.

For example, if a sender selects a five-minute timer, the countdown will not begin immediately. Instead, it will activate only after the recipient opens the message. If the recipient reads the message two hours later, the content would still remain available for five additional minutes after it is opened.

Interestingly, reports suggest unread messages may automatically disappear after 24 hours even if the recipient never opens them.

Privacy Feature May Be Optional for Specific Chats

The upcoming disappearing mode is expected to remain optional rather than becoming the default setting for all chats. Users may be able to manually enable the feature for selected conversations depending on the level of privacy they want.

This flexibility could help users keep sensitive chats more secure while allowing regular conversations to function normally. The feature is reportedly being integrated within WhatsApp’s existing “Default Message Timer” settings.

AI and Privacy Features Continue to Expand Across Meta Platforms

Meta has recently increased its focus on privacy and AI-powered features across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. The company has been introducing advanced chat tools, AI assistants, and temporary messaging options aimed at giving users more control over their conversations.

If the “After Reading” feature officially launches, it could appeal strongly to users who prefer short-lived conversations without manually deleting messages afterward.

Official Rollout Timeline Still Unknown

As of now, WhatsApp has not officially announced when the feature will arrive for stable users worldwide. Since the tool is still in beta testing, some functionality could change before the final release.

However, early reports indicate that Meta is seriously working on bringing a more advanced disappearing chat experience to both Android and iPhone users in the near future.
