WhatsApp account hacked? Don't panic, recover it in minutes

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world today. It's used for personal conversations, office work, online business, and document sharing. If your WhatsApp account is hacked, your personal information and chats could be at risk.

If you think your WhatsApp account has been taken over by someone else, there's no need to panic. By taking the right steps, you can try to recover your account. Let's explore the entire process.

How to know if your WhatsApp account has been hacked?

If you notice any of these signs, your account may have been compromised:

You've been suddenly logged out of your WhatsApp account.
Someone has requested your OTP without your knowledge.
Messages are being sent from your account to unknown people.
Your profile photo, name, or status has been changed without your permission.
You've received suspicious security-related messages or emails.

How to recover a hacked WhatsApp account?

1. Log in again with your number.

Open WhatsApp on your phone and log in again using the same mobile number. You will receive a 6-digit OTP via SMS. Once you enter the OTP, your account will be activated on the new device and logged out from the other device.

2. If Two-Step Verification is on

If you've already enabled Two-Step Verification, you'll need to enter a 6-digit PIN after the OTP. If you don't remember your PIN, follow the steps below to reset it. In some cases, you may need to wait for security reasons.

3. Secure your email account as well

If your WhatsApp account is linked to your email address or the same email address is used for other services, change your password immediately and enable Two-Factor Authentication. This will also protect your other online services.

4. Beware of suspicious links and messages

If someone accessed your account using a fake link or requesting an OTP, never share your OTP, PIN, or verification code with anyone in the future. WhatsApp or any trusted company never asks for an OTP over chat or calls.

5. Contact WhatsApp Support for assistance

If you can't log in to your account or someone else has taken control of it, contact WhatsApp's official support service and explain the situation. When asking for assistance, include your mobile number in international format (including the country code).

What to do after you get your account back?

Immediately turn on Two-Step Verification.
Add a secure email address (if the option is available).
Check all Linked Devices and remove unknown devices.
Review your profile photo, name, and privacy settings.
Notify your family and friends not to trust any suspicious messages sent from your account.
