Guillain-Barré Syndrome In Pune: Nowadays, the risk of such diseases is increasing whose name even common people may not have heard. 6 new suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, have been reported in Pune, a big city of Maharashtra. The total number of cases in this region has now reached 73.
How serious is the situation?
News agency PTI quoted a state health department official as saying, "The total number of GBS cases has risen to 73, including 47 men and 26 women. Of these, 14 are on ventilator support." Meanwhile, the health department has intensified its efforts to investigate the sudden increase in cases and has formed a Rapid Response Team (RRT) for this after the initial discovery of 24 suspected cases earlier this week.
What is Guillain-Barré syndrome?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological condition in which the body's immune system attacks a part of the peripheral nervous system. In this syndrome, nerves that control muscle movement and those that carry pain, temperature, and touch sensations are affected, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the legs and/or arms, and difficulties swallowing or breathing
Epidemic or not?
It is a rare condition, and although it is more common in adults and men, people of all ages can be affected. Officials have informed the public that while Guillain-Barré syndrome is dangerous, it cannot cause an epidemic or global pandemic.
How will we control the disease?
The Rapid Response Team (RRT) of the Maharashtra State Health Department is actively monitoring the affected areas with the help of the Pune Municipal Corporation and local health officials. Health officials have so far surveyed over 7,200 households in the city and its rural districts. The survey efforts have been carried out in multiple areas, such as the Pune Municipal Corporation, Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and rural districts. So far, 1,943 households have been surveyed within the PMC limits, 1,750 households in Chinchwad and 3,522 households in rural areas.
