The southwest monsoon continues to strengthen across India, bringing widespread rainfall and prompting fresh weather alerts in several parts of the country. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are expected to affect many regions on July 9.
The weather department has cautioned that wind speeds could reach 70–80 km/h in isolated areas, while several states are likely to witness intense rain over the next 24 hours. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with local weather advisories and take necessary precautions during severe weather conditions.
Monsoon Expected to Cover Remaining Parts of India
The southwest monsoon has made steady progress across the country over the past few days.
According to the IMD, atmospheric conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of India within the next two to three days. As the system strengthens, rainfall activity is expected to increase across northern, central, eastern, and western regions.
Meteorologists expect several areas to receive moderate to heavy rainfall as the monsoon remains active.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Several States
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in numerous states, with weather activity expected to remain intense throughout the day.
States likely to experience significant rainfall include:
- Delhi
- Uttar Pradesh
- Bihar
- Punjab
- Haryana
- Madhya Pradesh
- Himachal Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- West Bengal
- Jharkhand
- Assam
- Meghalaya
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Gujarat
- Maharashtra
- Karnataka
- Kerala
- Tamil Nadu
- Goa
- Odisha
- Sikkim
- Chandigarh
- Nearby adjoining regions
Rainfall intensity may vary from one location to another, with some districts likely to witness localized flooding and waterlogging.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Also Expected
In addition to heavy rainfall, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several regions.
Most affected areas may experience wind speeds of 40–50 km/h, while isolated locations could witness stronger gusts reaching 70–80 km/h.
States such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha are among those where strong winds and thunderstorms are expected to accompany rainfall.
These weather conditions could lead to disruptions in transportation, temporary power outages, and damage to weak structures or trees.
Delhi-NCR Likely to Receive Moderate Rain
Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region are expected to experience cloudy skies along with intermittent rainfall.
The weather department has forecast moderate showers in several parts of the city, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 km/h.
The rainfall is expected to provide relief from humid conditions, although commuters may face traffic congestion and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh on High Alert
The IMD has issued a warning for very heavy rainfall in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
According to the department, a deep depression has strengthened monsoon activity over the region, increasing the likelihood of intense rainfall during the next 24 hours.
Several districts have already recorded moderate to heavy showers. Among them, Rajapur in Chitrakoot district received approximately 144.4 mm of rainfall during the previous 24-hour period.
Authorities are closely monitoring river levels and low-lying areas as additional rainfall may increase the risk of localized flooding.
Red Alert Issued for Some Regions
The weather department has also issued Red Alerts for selected districts in Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and potentially hazardous weather conditions.
Residents in alert areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone locations, and follow official instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management agencies.
Public Advisory
With the monsoon expected to remain active over the coming days, people are encouraged to monitor official IMD weather updates, exercise caution while travelling, and avoid crossing flooded roads or waterlogged areas.
Strong winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall may temporarily disrupt road, rail, and air transport in some regions. Citizens are advised to remain indoors during severe thunderstorms whenever possible and report emergencies to local authorities promptly.
