Many Indians dream of working, settling, or even serving in the United States. A common question that often arises is whether an Indian citizen can directly join the US Army or elite units like the US Special Forces. This topic often sparks discussions on social media, but official recruitment and immigration rules are quite clear.
Here are the current US rules regarding the eligibility of foreign nationals, including Indians, to serve in the US military.
Can an Indian citizen join the US Special Forces?
An Indian citizen cannot directly enlist in the US Army or US Special Forces while living in India. To be eligible for military recruitment, a foreign national must first obtain legal permanent resident (green card) status in the United States.
Only after becoming a permanent resident can a person apply to join the US military, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements. Entry into the Special Forces is not straightforward—it requires first joining the military and then successfully completing additional selection processes, training, and qualification standards.
Under current rules, people living in the US on student visas, work visas, tourist visas, or other temporary visas are generally not eligible to enlist in the US military.
Some exemptions were allowed in the previous program
The United States previously operated a recruitment program called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI). This program allowed certain non-US citizens with valuable skills—such as medical expertise or knowledge of essential foreign languages—to join the military without obtaining a green card.
However, the MAVNI program is no longer active, and new applications are not being accepted.
Can military service expedite US citizenship?
Serving in the US military may provide eligible green card holders with certain immigration benefits, but it does not automatically guarantee US citizenship.
Under sections 328 and 329 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, qualifying service members can apply for naturalization under more favorable conditions than the standard process.
For example:
Permanent residents who complete at least one year of honorable military service during peacetime may be eligible to apply for US citizenship.
During periods of military hostilities, some service members may receive additional exemptions from certain residency requirements.
Even then, applicants must meet other legal requirements, including demonstrating good moral character, meeting English language standards, and passing the required civics requirements.
Can you apply from outside the United States?
No. According to US military recruitment policy, foreign citizens cannot apply to join the US military while living outside the United States.
To be eligible for recruitment, applicants must:
Be physically present in the United States.
Have a valid US Green Card.
Meet all military recruitment standards.
This means that an Indian citizen cannot enlist or join the US Special Forces directly from India without becoming a legal permanent resident of the United States.
