UCC Bill Gujarat: In India, laws related to relationships and family have long been based on different religions, but now some states are taking steps to implement a uniform law for all citizens. This is called the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Recently, the Gujarat government took a major decision. After a lengthy debate in the Gujarat Assembly, the UCC bill was passed.

Gujarat's UCC law is considered a major step towards social and legal change in India. Modern relationships, especially live-in relationships, are now being legally regulated. So, let's explore which states in the country require live-in relationships to be registered.

In which states of the country do live-in relationships require registration?

1. Uttarakhand -  Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to implement the UCC. Registration of live-in relationships is mandatory here. Couples must register within 30 days of entering into a live-in relationship. If the couple is between 18 and 21 years of age, the registrar must inform the parents. Children born from live-in relationships have legal rights. Failure to register can result in legal action.

2. Gujarat - Gujarat also recently implemented the UCC, and the rules here are considered even stricter. Live-in couples are required to register. Registration is also mandatory within 30 days. Living together for more than a month without registration can result in up to three months in jail or a fine of up to 10,000 rupees. There's also a special rule that if the partner is under 21, parents must be informed. If the woman leaves, she can seek maintenance, and the children will be considered fully legitimate and entitled to their rights.

3. Goa - Goa has had a Uniform Civil Code since the Portuguese rule. Similar legal rules apply here regarding marriage and relationships. However, the registration rules for live-in relationships are not as strict as in Gujarat and Uttarakhand.

Why are laws being made regarding live-in relationships?

Through these rules, the government aims to address some key issues. For example, in many cases, men leave the relationship and abandon the woman. Now, the law provides them protection. Previously, there was legal ambiguity regarding children born out of live-in relationships; now, they also have equal rights. Registration ensures that no one can deceive by concealing their identity or being married. Disputes arising from a relationship breakdown become easier to resolve.
