Social media influencers with 5 lakh followers will be celebrities.

Social Media Influencers: Important news has come from SEBI for those with a large number of followers on social media. Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed changes to new rules related to advertising, under which if a person has more than 500,000 followers or subscribers on a single social media platform, they will be included in the celebrity category.

According to the new draft of SEBI, the definition of celebrity is not limited to just film stars, but new faces like social media influencers, TV anchors, players, reality show winners, and digital avatars will also be included in it. Who will be considered a celebrity?

SEBI's proposal sets eight different criteria for a person or character to be considered a celebrity. This means that if you meet any one of these criteria, you can be considered a celebrity under advertising regulations.

Additionally, if you play a lead role in TV serials, TV shows, films, or web series on OTT platforms, you can also qualify for this category. Given the growing influence of social media, influencers with more than 500,000 followers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X can also be included.

Players, TV hosts, and AI avatars will also be included.

  • In the SEBI draft, players representing the country at the international level have also been considered a part of celebrities.
  • Especially, these will also include players participating in big sports like the Commonwealth Games, Olympics, Cricket, and Asian Games.
  • Apart from this, such TV hosts and anchors can also be included in the celebrities who have worked in at least one season or 10 episodes of a show.
  • Hosts of quiz shows, cooking shows, comedy shows, dance and singing competitions can also come under its purview.
  • Computer-generated AI avatars that look like humans can also be considered celebrities.
