Due to cheating in a relationship or extramarital affair
Why People Cheat In Relationships Psychology: Trust is considered the strongest foundation of any relationship. But when a partner becomes emotionally or physically attached to another person, this trust begins to crumble. Often, after an extramarital affair or cheating on a partner, people try to move on by calling it a "mistake." Some attribute it to a moment of weakness, while others say that circumstances were such that everything happened suddenly. But is infidelity in a relationship really a sudden mistake, or is it due to the person's decisions and behavior?
This question has long been debated in relationship psychology. Numerous studies suggest that unhappiness in a relationship isn't the only culprit behind cheating. Even people in healthy, satisfying relationships can cheat on their partners. This can be due to factors ranging from opportunity to impulsive behavior, emotional needs, and many other reasons.
What is cheating in a relationship?
Infidelity doesn't just mean having a physical relationship with another person. It can also include having an emotional, romantic, or sexual relationship with someone else while in a relationship, without their knowledge. This is generally understood in different categories, such as sexual, emotional, a combination of both, and internet infidelity. Today, due to social media and online platforms, internet infidelity has also become a topic of discussion. In this, a person may secretly form an emotional or romantic relationship with someone else online, which transgresses the boundaries set in their current relationship.
Does cheating happen suddenly?
After cheating on a partner, we often hear things like, "It just happened" or "I didn't understand it at the time." Impulsive behavior, i.e., making decisions quickly without much thought about the consequences, can influence a person's likelihood of cheating. However, this does not mean that an impulsive person is not responsible for their decisions.
A 2016 study linked sexual impulsivity to factors such as infidelity and risky sexual behavior. However, impulsivity isn't the only factor that determines a person's behavior. Their personality, self-control, personal values, and relationship perceptions can also influence their decisions.
Does everyone regret cheating?
It's commonly believed that a person will experience immense regret after an affair, but research reveals a more complex picture. A 2023 study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior examined the experiences of married people who had engaged in extramarital affairs. The study found that many participants reported sexual and emotional satisfaction from their affairs, and their level of regret was relatively low. The study also revealed that some people did not believe that the affair had harmed their marriage.
Why do people cheat on their partners?
There's no single answer to this question. According to psychologists, different people may have different reasons for cheating. The person cheating isn't necessarily completely unhappy with their current relationship. In some cases, the opportunity to grow closer to another person can play a significant role. According to researchers involved in a 2023 study, people often don't plan to cheat in advance, but when the opportunity arises, they can't resist temptation due to circumstances like fatigue, alcohol, distraction, or poor self-control.
Research also suggests some differences in the reasons for sexual abuse between men and women. Some men may cite unmet sexual needs as the reason, while some women may cite unmet emotional needs as the reason. However, this cannot be applied to every individual.
Is there a connection between power and cheating?
A 2024 study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior also examined the link between power and infidelity within relationships. According to the researchers, some people who feel more powerful in a relationship may believe they have other options available to them, such as their current partner. Such individuals may perceive themselves as more attractive partners to others. This belief in the existence of alternative options can, in some cases, weaken commitment to the current relationship. However, this does not mean that every successful or influential person will cheat on their partner.
