In a dramatic turn of events in the capital today, several key leaders of the INDIA bloc — including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Sharad Pawar — were detained by Delhi Police while attempting to march from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters. The march was organized to protest alleged voter list irregularities in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and to demand electoral transparency.
According to Delhi Police, the opposition leaders had not received formal permission for the march. Despite this, hundreds of MPs began the procession from Parliament House, aiming to reach the Election Commission’s office to submit a memorandum. The protest was halted at Transport Bhawan, where police had set up heavy barricades.
Tensions Rise as Leaders Clash with Security
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was taken into custody along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, and other senior leaders. Speaking after being detained, Rahul Gandhi declared,
"The truth is they cannot face the facts. This is not a political fight — it’s about protecting the Constitution and ensuring one person, one vote. We want a clean voter list."
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, too, voiced sharp criticism, calling the government “cowardly” and “fearful” for blocking peaceful protest.
Akhilesh Scales Barricades, Priyanka and Dimple Sit in Protest
The standoff escalated when Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav dramatically jumped over police barricades in defiance. Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav sat on the road, chanting slogans alongside other opposition leaders, including KC Venugopal and Mahua Maji.
The scenes drew significant attention as political tensions spilled into the streets, with several leaders refusing to leave the protest site.
Parliament Proceedings Disrupted
Earlier in the day, uproar over the Bihar voter list revision and other political issues forced both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to adjourn until 2:00 PM. Opposition members accused the government of attempting to suppress dissent and avoid scrutiny over alleged electoral malpractice.
INDIA Bloc’s Letter to Election Commission
This protest was not without prior notice. On August 10, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner on behalf of all opposition MPs, stating their intent to peacefully march from Parliament to the Election Commission on August 11. The letter emphasized that all opposition MPs wished to deliver the memorandum collectively, rather than sending a small delegation.
However, the police maintained that formal permission was never granted, citing security and traffic concerns in the capital.
Backdrop of Political Unrest
The INDIA bloc — an alliance of opposition parties — has repeatedly accused the government of manipulating electoral processes and undermining democratic institutions. The Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar has become a flashpoint, with allegations of irregularities triggering nationwide protests from opposition parties.
Today’s detentions mark yet another flashpoint in the ongoing standoff between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of upcoming elections. With visuals of barricade jumps, street sit-ins, and slogan-shouting leaders going viral, the confrontation is likely to fuel further political debate and polarization in the days to come.
