Punjab News: The Punjab government will release 108 prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment. This decision has been taken to give an opportunity for rehabilitation to those prisoners who behaved well during their imprisonment.

The Punjab government on Thursday said it has approved the premature release of 108 prisoners serving life sentences in jail on the basis of their good conduct.

State Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said in a statement that this decision has been taken with a view to providing an opportunity for rehabilitation to those prisoners who behaved well during their imprisonment.

Bhullar said, “This decision reflects the commitment of the state government to give a second chance to prisoners with good conduct who fulfil the criteria for early release.”

He said that this step is part of the government's comprehensive strategy that does not limit the justice system to just punishment but also works towards the rehabilitation of the individual and his reintegration into society.

Release of prisoners will promote humanitarian approach- Laljit Bhullar 

The Minister said that the release of these prisoners would promote a humane and more effective approach to the justice system.

About 800 'calling systems' were installed in jails

Bhullar said that around 800 'calling systems' have been installed in jails to facilitate communication between prisoners and their families and lawyers so that they do not use illegal mobile phones.

Prisoners can talk to their families and lawyers for 10 minutes every 15 days

He said that a free calling service is also being provided to the prisoners under which they can talk to their families and lawyers for 10 minutes every 15 days.
