The proposed change in the birthright citizenship laws in the US has created a situation of concern among the Indian and other migrant families living there. According to media reports, due to this change, which will come into effect from February 20, migrant families are forcing their women to undergo cesarean operations before time so that their children can get American citizenship. Experts have termed this method as extremely dangerous, as it can have a serious impact on the health of both the mother and the newborn.

Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director of Population Foundation of India, said that this method is not only harmful for the health of women, but also poses serious risks for newborn babies. She said that babies born prematurely face breathing problems, infections, developmental obstacles and behavioral challenges. At the same time, mothers are at risk of infections, problems related to operation and long-term health problems.

Fears increased due to change in law

According to media reports, this situation has arisen due to possible changes in birthright citizenship laws. After these changes, there may be uncertainty about the citizenship of children born after 20 February. Seema Bhaskaran associated with 'Transform Rural India' said that this fear is forcing women to take dangerous decisions like premature delivery.

Doctors warned

Dr. Anjali Kumar of CK Birla Hospital (Gurugram) highlighted the serious consequences of premature delivery. She said that this trend is increasing health risks. Children born prematurely can suffer from health problems throughout their lives. At the same time, women have to face risks related to surgery and long-term health problems.

Role of society and policy makers

Experts stressed the need for planned policy interventions to prevent such dangerous decisions. They said that society and the government should work together to reduce the social and economic pressure on women so that they can ensure the safety of themselves and their children.
