If you also wear contact lenses, then be careful. A woman from America had to pay such a terrible price for going into water wearing contact lenses that your soul will tremble after hearing it. Just a small negligence took away her eyesight and she even had to leave her job.

In fact, 53-year-old Maureen Cronin (who was a swimming trainer) went into the water wearing contact lenses while teaching swimming to children in June 2024. This was a common thing for her, but this time the circumstances were different. After some time, she started having severe burning sensation and pain in her right eye. At first she felt that a particle of sand had entered the eye, but in a few days the pain became unbearable. Despite consulting many doctors, the correct disease could not be detected and she was repeatedly given different medicines.

A month later, when he consulted a specialist doctor, he found out that he had contracted a dangerous parasitic infection called Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK). This infection was caused by going into water while wearing contact lenses.

How did the infection happen?

Acanthamoeba keratitis infection is caused by an amoeba (single-celled organism) found in freshwater, seawater, soil and swimming pools. If a person goes into water wearing contact lenses, this parasite can get trapped between the lens and the cornea and penetrate the surface of the eye, causing damage.

Lost vision!

Maureen's condition became so serious that she had to be admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital in New York on 7 August 2024. She spent 48 days there and underwent cornea transplant surgery in September. But her eye rejected the transplant, causing her to completely lose vision in her right eye. She is now awaiting another cornea transplant, which may restore some of her vision.

Maureen is now afraid of water!

Maureen is now living in the shadow of the fear of complete blindness. She is now afraid of even going near water and is even forced to bathe wearing goggles. She says that I am now afraid of meeting strangers, I wonder what people will think after seeing my eyes. I am always afraid of water.

Giving warning to people!

Maureen is now making people aware of Acanthamoeba keratitis infection and warning lens wearers to never wear lenses in contact with water. She says that Acanthamoeba keratitis is very little known and it is often misdiagnosed. Anyone who wears contact lenses should never wear lenses while swimming, showering or even in the rain.
