New invention of IIT Guwahati, nano material will detect dangerous toxins in the body

IIT Guwahati News: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati on Monday developed a new nanomaterial that can help detect toxins dangerous to human health without much cost.

IIT Guwahati New Invention: Mercury can enter the body through contaminated food, water, air or skin contact. Exposure to these causes serious health problems, including damage to the nervous system, organ failure and cognitive impairment. A team of scientists has developed nanoparticles that are made of metals and are very stable. These nanoparticles can detect toxic metals such as mercury present in living cells, without causing any harm to them.

Researchers say that this new invention can revolutionize disease detection and environmental monitoring. It will improve the detection and management of metal toxicity in biological systems. Saikat Bhowmick, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, IIT Guwahati, said, "A key feature of these perovskite nanocrystals is their narrow emission line, which is suitable for enhancing the sensitivity of metal detection due to its high signal-to-noise ratio."

Bhowmick said conventional imaging methods often struggle with light scattering, making it difficult to capture clear images from deeper cell layers. "The ability of perovskite nanocrystals to undergo multi-photon absorption overcomes this limitation, allowing for clearer and more detailed imaging. These properties make them ideal for advanced fluorescence imaging in medical and biological research," he added.

The nanocrystals have demonstrated accurate sensitivity in detecting even very low levels of mercury. Moreover, the nanocrystals have been found to be non-toxic when tested on living mammalian cells. This will not affect the functions of the cells and will make accurate monitoring of mercury ions possible. Apart from detecting mercury, these nanocrystals can play an important role in identifying other toxic metals in biological systems.
