Even after five years of the pandemic, the effects of corona are not showing any signs of ending. A recent study has shown that women are 31% more at risk of getting long covid than men. This research was done by the University of Texas Health Science Center (UT Health San Antonio) in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Long Covid is a chronic condition in which symptoms persist months or years after a Covid-19 infection. Its symptoms include fatigue, sleep problems, headache, shortness of breath, cough and irregular heartbeat. This condition begins at least three months after a Covid-19 infection and can persist for a long time.

Why is the risk higher in women?

Research has found that women are at a higher risk of long Covid due to age, pregnancy and menopause. According to the study, this risk is highest in women aged 40-55 years. The risk of long Covid was found to be 42% higher in women undergoing menopause and 45% higher in non-menopausal women.

Key points of the research

The research titled "Sex Differences in Long Covid" was published in 'JAMA Network Open'. It studied 12,276 participants. The study was conducted at 83 sites in 33 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.

Researchers found that the average age of Covid-19 infection in women was 46 years. Race, ethnicity, Covid variants, severity of infection and socio-economic factors were taken into account while analyzing the risk of long Covid.

Earlier men were considered to be at greater risk

Earlier studies had found that men have higher severe cases of Covid-19 and higher mortality rates. But this new study showed that women are at higher risk of long Covid after infection.
