On this day, Lord Ganesha is worshipped and offered his favorite offerings. Modaks hold special significance among these offerings. It is believed that modaks are very dear to Lord Ganesha. While commercial modaks are delicious, if you want to offer Lord Ganesha homemade offerings, you can easily make delicious modaks at home. Modaks are made in many ways, but the traditional Ukdiche Modak is extremely popular for its distinctive sweetness, soft outer layer, and delicious coconut-jaggery filling. If you also want to make modaks at home this Ganesh Chaturthi, this easy recipe is for you.
Prepare the filling
First, heat some ghee in a pan, add grated coconut, and sauté briefly. Add jaggery and cook over low heat until the jaggery melts and combines with the coconut. Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts. Be careful not to overcook the mixture, or the filling may become too dry. Set the mixture aside to cool.
Modak will become soft
To prepare the outer layer of the modak, bring water, ghee, and a pinch of salt to a boil in a pan. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat and slowly add the rice flour, stirring constantly. Be sure to avoid lumps. Turn off the heat and let the mixture sit, covered, for a few minutes. When the mixture has cooled slightly and is manageable, knead it well to form a soft dough. You can also apply a little ghee or water to your hands if needed.
Modak will look beautiful.
Now form small balls of dough. Place one ball in your palm and shape it into a bowl with your fingers. Place the prepared coconut-jaggery filling in the center. Now, fold the edges into small petals, folding them upwards, and then joining all the edges to form a modak. Prepare all the modaks in this manner. If you have a modak mold, you can use that.
Steam the Modaks
Place them in a steamer and steam for 10 to 15 minutes. When the outer layer of the modaks becomes shiny and soft, they are ready. Brush a little ghee on the prepared modaks. If desired, you can garnish them with saffron or a few dried fruits. Fresh homemade modaks are not only delicious, but also add to the joy and family atmosphere of the festival.
