LPG Supply Concerns Grow: Government Encourages Households to Switch to PNG for Reliable Cooking Gas

Concerns about the availability of LPG cylinders have surfaced in several parts of India amid ongoing global energy uncertainties. Rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia have created instability in international oil and gas markets, which can indirectly influence domestic fuel supply chains. In response to these concerns, the government has appealed to households living near piped gas networks to consider switching to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as a more dependable alternative for cooking fuel.

Officials believe that encouraging households to adopt PNG in areas where infrastructure already exists could help maintain a steady supply of cooking gas while reducing pressure on LPG cylinder demand.

Government Appeals to Families Near PNG Networks

According to officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, around 60 lakh households located near existing PNG pipeline networks are capable of transitioning from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas connections. By doing so, these families could benefit from a continuous supply of cooking fuel without relying on cylinder refills.

PNG, or Piped Natural Gas, is delivered directly to homes through underground pipelines connected to city gas distribution systems. Unlike LPG cylinders that require periodic booking and delivery, PNG provides an uninterrupted gas supply, making it a convenient option for urban households.

The government believes that increasing the number of households using PNG could help balance overall gas demand and ease pressure on LPG distribution across the country.

LPG Usage in India

India currently has around 33.37 crore LPG consumers, making it one of the most widely used cooking fuels in the country. In comparison, approximately 1.5 crore households currently use PNG connections.

With city gas networks expanding rapidly in many urban areas, authorities see PNG as an important long-term solution for improving energy accessibility and reliability for households.

By shifting households that already have access to PNG infrastructure, the government hopes to ensure smoother LPG distribution for regions where pipelines are not yet available.

Strict Warning Against Hoarding and Black Marketing

Amid growing concerns about LPG availability, the government has also issued a clear warning against hoarding and illegal trading of gas cylinders.

Authorities have instructed state governments to closely monitor LPG distribution and take strict action against individuals or businesses attempting to hoard cylinders or sell them in the black market.

Senior officials from petroleum and civil supplies departments have already held discussions with state authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms. States have been asked to intensify inspections and ensure that LPG cylinders reach genuine consumers without disruption.

Increase in Domestic LPG Production

To reassure consumers, the government has stated that domestic LPG production has increased significantly in recent weeks. Officials reported that production levels have risen by roughly 30 percent since early March, helping maintain a stable supply.

Despite these efforts, a sudden spike in demand has been observed due to panic buying.

Under normal circumstances, India records about 5.57 million LPG refill bookings per day. Recently, however, the number surged to around 7.57 million bookings in a single day, indicating that many households were ordering additional cylinders out of fear of shortages.

Authorities say that this surge is primarily driven by precautionary buying rather than an actual supply crisis.

Essential Sectors Given Priority

To ensure that critical services are not affected, the government has decided to prioritise LPG supply for essential sectors.

Households, hospitals and educational institutions are currently being given preference in gas distribution. At the same time, the supply of commercial LPG used by hotels, restaurants and other businesses has been temporarily reduced.

Nearly one-fifth of the commercial LPG supply has been redirected to state governments and union territories. This step allows local authorities to manage distribution based on regional needs and maintain balance in supply.

Global Energy Routes Impact the Situation

The current concerns surrounding LPG supply are partly linked to geopolitical developments in West Asia, a region that plays a key role in global energy trade.

A major shipping route for oil and gas, the Strait of Hormuz, lies between Iran and Oman and handles a significant share of the world’s energy shipments. Any disruption in this strategic corridor can influence global fuel markets and indirectly affect supply chains in many countries, including India.

Because of these uncertainties, authorities are closely monitoring international developments while ensuring domestic supply remains stable.

Government Urges Consumers to Avoid Panic Buying

Officials have repeatedly urged consumers to remain calm and avoid stockpiling LPG cylinders unnecessarily. According to government sources, supplies remain stable and the distribution network is functioning normally.

For households living in areas where PNG pipelines are available, switching to piped natural gas could provide a convenient and reliable alternative to LPG cylinders.

As India continues expanding its city gas distribution network, PNG is expected to play an increasingly important role in meeting household energy needs in urban areas.
