Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma's Captaincy: Shubman Gill has now become the new captain of the Indian ODI team. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar has made a significant statement.

With the change of captain of the Indian ODI team, the "Rohit Sharma era" has come to an end. While announcing the Indian squad for the Australia tour, Ajit Agarkar announced that Shubman Gill would be appointed the new ODI captain, while Rohit would continue to play as a batsman. Meanwhile, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has predicted more "bad news" could be coming soon.

Sunil Gavaskar believes that the Indian team won't have to play many ODI matches until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Therefore, if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli want to maintain their game fitness, they will have to remain active in domestic cricket. In an interview with Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar was asked if any more "bad news" could come regarding Rohit Sharma, and he replied in the affirmative.

Sunil Gavaskar said, "Yes, absolutely. If you (Rohit Sharma) are not committed, are not sure whether you will be ready for the next two years or not, then be prepared for bad news. He also knows that if he plays only ODIs, he will need more practice and will have to participate in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy."

The team comes first...

The Indian legend also pointed out that Rohit Sharma currently only plays ODIs, but Team India won't be playing many ODIs until the 2027 World Cup. Consequently, Rohit Sharma won't be able to practice as much as is required for a tournament like the World Cup. Gavaskar said that the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as captain was likely due to Rohit's uncertain place in the team.
