IPL Orange Cap Winners (2008-2024)

The batsman who scores the most runs in each season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is awarded the Orange Cap. It is considered to be the highest honor received at the individual level. In the first season of IPL in 2008, Shaun Marsh, who played for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), won this cap.

He scored 616 runs in 11 matches. Before IPL 2008, very few people knew Shaun Marsh in the world of cricket, but after a brilliant performance in this tournament, he confirmed his place in the Australian national team.

Sachin Tendulkar, known as the God of Cricket, also won the Orange Cap in 2010 while playing for Mumbai Indians. He scored 618 runs in 15 matches that season. After this, West Indies veteran batsman Chris Gayle, popularly known as "Universe Boss", won the Orange Cap twice in a row in 2011 and 2012 and became the first player to do so. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Gayle scored 608 runs in 2011 and 733 runs in 15 matches in 2012.

IPL Orange Cap Winners: David Warner

However, Australian veteran opener David Warner leads the list. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Warner won the Orange Cap three times between 2015 and 2019 and is the batsman who has won the IPL Orange Cap the most number of times.

In 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the title under the captaincy of Warner, but this season is also remembered for the brilliant batting of Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli. Kohli scored 973 runs in 16 matches that year, which is the record for most runs in any IPL season. In 2024, Kohli once again won the Orange Cap when he scored 741 runs in 15 matches.

Jos Buttler, playing for Rajasthan Royals, came close to breaking Kohli's record in 2022. He scored 863 runs in 17 matches and won the Orange Cap. But Buttler's record was broken by Shubman Gill in the very next season.

The Gujarat Titans batsman scored 890 runs in 17 matches in 2023 and became the highest run-scorer of the tournament. However, whenever Gill, Buttler or Kohli shone at the individual level, their team could not win the IPL title.

In contrast, Robin Uthappa (Kolkata Knight Riders, 2014) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings, 2021) are the only two players who have managed to win both the Orange Cap and the IPL trophy in the same season.
