Middle East tensions have a major impact on India
India Poverty Report: Amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, bad news is emerging for India. According to a report, this global crisis could push approximately 2.5 million people in India into poverty. Furthermore, human development could be hampered and other losses could be faced.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a United Nations agency, has revealed these facts in its report. Let's find out what impact this war will have on India.
Clouds of crisis over 25 lakh people
The latest UNDP report indicates that approximately 8.8 million people worldwide could fall into poverty. The report also suggests that rising military spending and persistent tensions in West Asia will not be limited to that region alone, but could also impact the economies of the Pacific region.
Estimates estimate the potential loss at approximately US$299 billion. Regarding India, the report states that the number of people affected by poverty in the country could increase from approximately 400,000 to 2.5 million.
Poverty rate also increased.
The report also discusses the country's poverty rate. India's poverty rate could rise from 23.9 percent to 24.2 percent. This could result in an additional 2,464,698 people falling into poverty. Furthermore, it is estimated that a total of approximately 35,40,33,698 people in the country could live in poverty after this crisis. Previously, this figure was estimated at 35,15,69,000.
The country's dependence on the Middle East
The UNDP report also highlights the country's dependence on the Middle East. According to the report, the country imports more than 90 percent of its oil needs from other countries. Of these, 40 percent of crude oil and 90 percent of LPG come from West Asian countries. Furthermore, the Middle East supplies more than 45 percent of fertilizers. These figures clearly demonstrate the extent to which the country relies on Middle Eastern countries to meet its energy needs.
