Why is the flag hoisted on 14 August in Purnia?

While the whole country is busy preparing for the 15th August celebrations, a tradition is followed in Purnia that has been going on since the night of India's independence in 1947.

At 12:01 am on August 14, 1947, as India officially gained independence, freedom fighter Rameshwar Prasad Singh, along with his comrades Ramratan Sah and Shamsul Haque, hoisted the Indian tricolour in Purnia.

This act symbolized the first moments of India's independence and has deep historical significance for the people of Purnia.

A tradition that continues today

Since that historic night, Purnia has kept this tradition alive. Every year on August 14, residents gather to hoist the national flag at midnight, commemorating the moment when the first ray of freedom dawned.

This local ritual is not only a celebration but also a tribute to the courage and patriotism of the people who were part of India's freedom struggle.
