IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for 20+ States Until July 7; Thunderstorms, Strong Winds Expected Across India

The southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly across India, bringing widespread rainfall and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue weather alerts for more than 20 states and Union Territories. According to the latest forecast released on July 1, 2026, several regions are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the coming days.
The weather department has indicated that active monsoon conditions are expected to continue until July 7, with different parts of the country witnessing varying intensities of rainfall.
Southwest Monsoon Advances Further Across India
The IMD reported that the southwest monsoon has progressed into additional parts of:
- Gujarat
- Madhya Pradesh
- Uttar Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- Himachal Pradesh
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Ladakh
- Haryana
- Punjab
- Daman & Diu
The department also stated that weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further into Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh over the next two days.
Delhi, Haryana and Punjab to Witness Heavy Rain
The national capital and adjoining northwestern states are expected to receive widespread rainfall during the forecast period.
According to IMD:
- Delhi, Chandigarh and Haryana may experience heavy rainfall between July 2 and July 7.
- Punjab is likely to receive heavy rainfall during July 2–4 and July 6–7.
- Gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, with occasional gusts reaching 60 kmph, may accompany thunderstorms across the region.
Uttar Pradesh Rain Forecast
Rainfall activity is expected across both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Forecast highlights include:
- Western Uttar Pradesh: Widespread rainfall on July 1 and 2, followed by scattered showers during the remaining forecast period.
- Eastern Uttar Pradesh: Intermittent rainfall through July 5, with more widespread rain expected on July 6 and 7.
- Heavy rainfall is likely across several districts between July 1–3 and again during July 6–7.
- Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40–50 kmph are also possible in many areas.
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir
The hill states are expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall throughout the week.
IMD has forecast:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand during July 1–3.
- Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh during July 2–3 and July 5–6.
- Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh between July 1 and July 7.
Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert for possible landslides and localized flooding.
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh Under Rain Alert
Eastern Rajasthan is likely to witness increased rainfall activity later in the week.
The forecast indicates:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Eastern Rajasthan during July 3–7.
- Scattered showers and dust storms across Western Rajasthan between July 1 and July 7.
In Madhya Pradesh, rainfall is expected to remain active throughout the week.
The IMD has also warned of:
- Thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, with gusts reaching 70 kmph, in several districts.
- Very heavy rainfall over parts of western Madhya Pradesh around July 3–4.
Heavy Rain Likely in Western India
Western India is expected to remain under the influence of an active monsoon.
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across:
- Konkan
- Goa
- Gujarat
- Madhya Maharashtra
- Saurashtra
- Kutch
Some locations may receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, particularly between July 1 and July 5, increasing the possibility of waterlogging and localized flooding.
East and Northeast India to Receive Widespread Rainfall
The eastern states are also expected to experience significant rainfall activity.
Forecast highlights include:
- Heavy rainfall in Bihar through July 4.
- Continued rain across Jharkhand throughout the week.
- Heavy rainfall in Odisha between July 1 and July 6.
- Very heavy rainfall over parts of Gangetic West Bengal around July 5–7.
The northeastern states—including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura—are also expected to receive widespread rainfall during the first half of the forecast period.
Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana Also on Alert
Southern India will continue to experience active monsoon conditions.
The IMD expects:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall across Coastal Karnataka during several days of the forecast period.
- Heavy rainfall in South Interior Karnataka later in the week.
- Widespread showers across Kerala and Lakshadweep through July 7.
- Rain and strong surface winds across Telangana during the first week of July.
Advisory for Fishermen
In view of rough sea conditions and strong winds, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along several coastal regions until July 6.
The advisory covers parts of:
- Arabian Sea
- Gujarat coast
- Konkan and Goa coast
- Karnataka coast
- Kerala coast
- Lakshadweep region
- Bay of Bengal
- Odisha coast
- West Bengal coast
- Northern Andhra Pradesh coast
- Andaman Sea
Authorities have urged residents in affected regions to stay updated with local weather advisories, avoid waterlogged areas where possible, and exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
