India's upcoming festive season could bring a major employment boost for job seekers, particularly freshers, women and workers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. A recent report by talent solutions company NLB Services estimates that around 2 lakh to 2.5 lakh seasonal and gig jobs could be generated between July and December 2026 as businesses prepare for a sharp rise in consumer demand.
Hiring activity during the festive period is projected to increase by approximately 15% to 20%, according to the report. The opportunities are expected to come from industries that experience a surge in orders, deliveries, travel and customer activity during the festival months.
E-commerce, quick commerce, organised retail, logistics, hospitality, travel and consumer services are among the major sectors expected to expand their workforce.
Companies Preparing Early for Festive Demand
India's festive season is one of the busiest periods for consumer-facing businesses. With shopping and online orders rising substantially during major festivals, companies need additional workers across warehouses, delivery networks, retail outlets, customer support operations and other services.
This requirement has traditionally created a large number of temporary and gig jobs. However, the latest hiring trend indicates that companies are increasingly looking beyond short-term staffing.
According to NLB Services, employers are beginning their recruitment preparations well before the actual festive rush. Companies may start planning their workforce requirements around 12 to 14 weeks in advance, allowing them to create a pool of available workers before demand reaches its peak.
Early hiring can also reduce the pressure businesses face when they need thousands of workers within a short period.
Varun Sachdeva, Senior Vice President and APAC Head at NLB Services, said the festive period is increasingly becoming an important test for India's employment market. Businesses are hiring earlier and expanding their search beyond traditional employment hubs while relying more heavily on technology-enabled and deployment-ready workers.
Festive Hiring Is Moving Beyond Temporary Jobs
Seasonal recruitment is also becoming a way for employers to identify workers who could potentially remain with the organisation beyond the festive period.
Instead of treating festive hiring purely as a temporary solution to higher demand, businesses can use these months to access new talent pools, evaluate workers at scale and identify people suitable for longer-term employment.
This could make seasonal work particularly useful for young people trying to enter the workforce for the first time. A temporary or gig role can provide practical work experience while giving employers an opportunity to assess a worker's performance in real-world conditions.
However, applicants should remember that not every festive-season position will automatically turn into permanent employment. The duration and employment terms will depend on the company, role and contract offered.
Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities Could Account for 45% of Hiring Demand
One of the most significant trends highlighted in the report is the growing role of smaller cities in India's employment market.
Around 45% of total festive hiring demand is expected to come from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Recruitment activity in these markets could rise by approximately 25% to 30%.
The expansion of e-commerce, quick-commerce platforms, organised retail and regional order-fulfilment networks is helping businesses create jobs outside India's traditional metropolitan employment centres.
Cities including Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Surat, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Chandigarh and Kochi are among the locations where employment demand is expected to increase.
This geographical shift could be particularly important for job seekers who previously had to consider moving to major metros for employment opportunities.
Freshers and Women Could Find More Opportunities
The report also identifies freshers and women as increasingly important groups in festive-season recruitment.
For young people seeking their first job, seasonal hiring can open entry-level opportunities in areas such as delivery operations, warehousing, order processing, customer service, retail sales, hospitality and logistics.
The gig economy itself is also changing. Gig employment was once largely associated with relatively straightforward delivery and non-technical roles. Companies are now recruiting workers with specialised, trained and technology-related capabilities as their operations become increasingly digital.
As a result, candidates with digital skills, technical knowledge and familiarity with app-based work systems may also find opportunities during the hiring surge.
What Job Seekers Can Do Now
With businesses beginning their hiring preparations weeks ahead of peak festive demand, candidates interested in these opportunities may benefit from getting their applications ready early.
Job seekers should update their resumes, clearly mention relevant skills and previous experience, and keep essential employment documents ready. Freshers can highlight educational qualifications, internships, technical abilities, communication skills and any relevant training.
Candidates should also verify job advertisements before providing personal information or paying any money. Genuine employers generally do not demand large upfront payments simply to issue an appointment letter or guarantee a job.
With an estimated 2 lakh to 2.5 lakh seasonal and gig opportunities potentially emerging between July and December 2026, this year's festive hiring cycle could provide a substantial employment window. The growing contribution of smaller cities, along with demand for freshers, women and skilled gig workers, indicates that festive recruitment is expanding beyond India's traditional job markets.
