Every second person in Delhi complains of this liver-rotting disease, revealed in a survey

Is Fatty Liver Serious: In a survey conducted in the country's capital, about 50 percent of adults above the age of 18 were found to be suffering from fatty liver disease, which is the first stage of liver decay.

A very frightening revelation has come out in a survey conducted by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Science (ILBS) in 11 districts of Delhi in the year 2021-2022. Out of more than 6000 people included in this survey, 56 percent of the population i.e. 3468 people have been found to be suffering from metabolic disease fatty liver (MAFLD).

Most of these people are obese. At the same time, 11 percent of the people suffering from fatty liver are thin and of normal weight. Dr SK Sarin, author of the survey report, who is also the director of ILBS, told TOI that this survey highlights the rapidly increasing cases of MAFLD in India. It is important that we increase awareness about this disease and educate people about it.

What is fatty liver

Fatty liver is a medical condition in which a lot of fat gets deposited on this organ. Although it can be controlled with lifestyle improvements. But ignoring it for a long time increases the risk of liver rot.

Fatty liver associated with these diseases

MAFLD stands for overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and metabolic disorders. The disease is associated with serious liver diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, liver scarring, liver cancer.

This disease is confirmed after 10-15 years of fatty liver

Fatty liver starts 10-15 years before high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and other non-communicable diseases. In such a situation, Dr. Sarin says that by preventing and reversing fatty liver, we can prevent the dangerous consequences of this disease within a decade.

Ways to prevent fatty liver

The director of ILBS said that weight loss, exercise, consumption of a healthy diet prove to be very beneficial in reducing the risk of MAFLD. Apart from this, weight management, liver surgery, transplant and CRRT therapy are required to reverse this condition.
