Ceramic Shield or Gorilla Glass? Which will offer more protection?

Ceramic Shield vs. Gorilla Glass: Companies like Apple and Samsung use Ceramic Shield and Gorilla Glass as protective glass. Let's find out which of these two is stronger.

Which option is better, Ceramic Shield or Gorilla Glass?

Ceramic Shield vs. Gorilla Glass: Phones are becoming so robust that the need for screen guards is disappearing. Companies like Apple and Samsung are using protective options like Ceramic Shield and Gorilla Glass for screen protection. Both glasses offer excellent durability and are manufactured by the same company, Corning. Therefore, it's interesting to understand the differences between the two. The company hasn't compared them, but there are significant differences.

How is Ceramic Shield made?

Apple is using Ceramic Shield in iPhones launched after the iPhone 12. Both Apple and Corning claim that it is twice as strong as other protective glass. It is created by embedding ceramic nanocrystals into the glass. These crystals bond together to prevent cracking, and the ionized glass provides strength. This makes it scratch-resistant and less likely to break if dropped.

How strong is Ceramic Shield?

According to reports, in a test, the Ceramic Shield 2 on the iPhone 17 Pro was comparable to Gorilla Glass Victus in terms of durability. Scratches on the Ceramic Shield 2 began appearing at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, while the scratches appeared at level 7. However, despite the visible marks on the screen, their visibility was minimal. Users are also acknowledging that while the latest iPhone models are quite durable, scratches are still unavoidable, leading to the need for a screen protector.

How strong is Gorilla Glass?

Gorilla Glass has been around for many years and has seen significant improvements. Gorilla Glass is created through ion exchange. To create it, molten salt is exposed to high temperatures, where sodium ions in the water evaporate. Larger potassium ions in the salt then replace the smaller ions, creating a stronger exterior layer. Victus 2 is so strong that it remains undamaged even if dropped onto concrete from a height of one meter. It's also comparable to Ceramic Shield in terms of scratch resistance. The new Gorilla Armor uses ceramic material, making it even stronger.
