BCI suspends lawyer from practice for attempting to throw a shoe at the Supreme Court

Bar Council of India: Bar Council of India President Manan Kumar Mishra said that during the period of suspension, Rakesh Kishore will not be able to appear in any court or tribunal in India.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Monday (October 6, 2025) suspended Supreme Court lawyer Rakesh Kishore from practice with immediate effect. The BCI took this action based on the lawyer's disrespectful behavior toward Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a Supreme Court proceeding.

The order, signed by Bar Council of India President Manan Kumar Mishra, clarified that Rakesh Kishore will not be able to appear before any court or tribunal in India during the period of his suspension. It also directed that all ID cards or access passes issued in his name be immediately deactivated.
What did the Bar Council of India say in the order?
The CBI cited an incident that occurred in the Chief Justice of India's court on Monday (October 6, 2025). The order states that prima facie evidence indicates that at approximately 11:35 a.m. on October 6, 2025, lawyer Rakesh Kishore removed his shoe and attempted to throw it at the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court. He was immediately detained by security personnel present there.

The interim order states that this action is being taken under the Advocates Act, 1961, and the Bar Council of India Rules. These rules govern the conduct, dignity, and respect of lawyers towards the court. The Bar Council of India (BCI) stated that this order is interim. A show-cause notice has also been issued to the lawyer. Further disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the law.
