BCB bows to Bangladeshi players, sacks director for calling him 'Indian agent'

BCB Sacks Director Najmul Islam: Following protests by the Bangladesh Cricketers Welfare Association, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has removed Director Najmul Islam from his post.

Bangladesh cricket has been in turmoil since BCB director Nazmul Islam called Tamim Iqbal an "Indian agent." Bangladesh players strongly protested this. On Thursday, the association representing Bangladeshi cricketers held a press conference, stating that players would not play in any format until Nazmul resigned. This is why the first match of the BPL 2026 did not start, even though the referee arrived on the field for the toss, but the captain did not. The BCB has removed Nazmul Hussain from his position

The BCB issued a press release stating, "The Bangladesh Cricket Board wishes to inform that, after reviewing the recent developments and in the best interest of the organisation, the BCB President has decided to relieve Nazmul Islam of his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect. This decision has been taken in exercise of the powers vested in the BCB President under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution and is aimed at ensuring the smooth and effective functioning of the affairs of the Board."

The BCB further stated that the position of acting Finance Committee Chairman will now be held by the BCB President until further notice. "Until further notice, the BCB President will hold the position of acting Finance Committee Chairman. The BCB reiterates that the interests of cricketers are its top priority. The Board is fully committed to maintaining the honour and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction," the release said.

The BCB was disgraced by the BPL boycott.

Bangladesh players had threatened to stop playing in any format unless Nazmul Islam was removed from his position. The players boycotted the first match of the Bangladesh Premier League 2026. On January 15th, the first match, between Noakhali Express and Chattogram Royals, did not start on time because neither captain arrived at the ground for the toss, even though the referees had arrived. In a statement, the BCB also urged the players to return to the BPL.

"In this regard, the BCB expects all cricketers to continue to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and dedication for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket during this challenging period for the game, and to do their best to ensure continued participation in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)," the board wrote.
