Bangladesh Captain Litton Das Breaks Silence on T20 World Cup Controversy
With about two weeks left for the 2026 T20 World Cup to begin, the picture regarding Bangladesh's participation remains unclear. Tensions continue between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding their matches in India. Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Liton Das has given his first reaction to the controversy.
Bangladesh captain Liton Das breaks his silence.
Speaking to the media after a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match on Tuesday, Liton Das was asked whether domestic tournament pitches were helping in preparation for the T20 World Cup. In response, Liton pointed to the uncertainty surrounding the World Cup and clearly stated that he was in no position to comment on the issue. "Are you sure we're going to play the World Cup? From my side, the situation is unclear. Everyone is confused. Right now, the whole of Bangladesh is in uncertainty. I understand what you're asking, but it's not safe for me to answer that question," Das said.
ICC and BCB face off
The BCB has demanded that the ICC relocate its 2026 T20 World Cup matches scheduled in India to Sri Lanka. The board claims it has concerns about the team's safety in India. However, the ICC appears unwilling to comply, and several meetings have yielded no concrete results.
Bangladesh government's tough stance
Bangladesh government sports advisor Asif Nazrul has already taken a firm stance on this issue. He has clearly stated that the Bangladesh team will not travel to India under any circumstances. The ICC has given the BCB an ultimatum to clarify its position by January 21st, but the government appears unlikely to back down from its stance.
Asif Nazrul also stated that if the ICC attempts to impose unfair conditions on Bangladesh through pressure, they will not be accepted. He also reminded that in the past, the ICC had changed the venue when Pakistan refused to travel to India, so Bangladesh's demand should be viewed in the same light.
Will Scotland get entry?
If Bangladesh withdraws from the T20 World Cup, Scotland could be included in its place based on the current rankings. Currently, the entire matter remains in limbo, and cricket fans are awaiting the ICC's final decision.
