At the same time, the time for breaking the fast will be from 05:53 am to 08:29 am on the next day i.e. August 20.

According to the legend, in ancient times there used to be a Chakravarti King Harishchandra. He had no dearth of wealth and food grains. But a time came when his entire kingdom was lost. He even lost his wife, son and family. Harishchandra went from being a king to becoming a slave of a Chandal.

Once Gautam Rishi arrived in the village. Harishchandra greeted him and told him his problem. Gautam Rishi listened to everything Harishchandra said and advised him to observe Aja Ekadashi fast on the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. The Rishi said that by observing this fast all sins will be destroyed and you will get back whatever you lost. As per the advice of the Rishi, Harishchandra observed the Aja Ekadashi fast on the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month and worshipped Lord Vishnu.

Due to the effect of Aja Ekadashi fast, all the sins of Harishchandra were destroyed. Along with this, the king also regained his family and kingdom. Due to the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Harishchandra attained Vaikuntha after his death. Therefore, it is said that due to the effect of Aja Ekadashi fast, a person gets back everything that he had lost.
