IndiGo Flight Disruption: IndiGo, one of the country's largest airlines, is once again facing questions regarding safety and compliance with regulations. Aviation regulator DCGA has warned the airline about negligence regarding the handling of dangerous goods. DCGA's investigation has revealed instances where prescribed safety procedures were not followed.

Following this action, discussions regarding passenger safety have intensified. However, the DGCA has not yet imposed a fine in this case, but has issued a warning to improve regulations and requested an action report from the airline.

What is the whole matter?
An investigation by the DGCA found deficiencies in IndiGo's engineering, storage, and hazardous goods handling processes. The investigation revealed that, in some instances, regulations and standard operating procedures for handling hazardous goods were not fully followed.

The airline also cited an incident involving dangerous goods transported on a flight. Following this, the DGCA tightened its security protocols and directed IndiGo to make improvements.

When did DGCA take major action against IndiGo?

1. In July 2026,
the DGCA, in a special audit, found that IndiGo had not fully complied with certain safety regulations and SOPs related to the handling of dangerous goods. Following this, the airline was issued a warning letter and asked to report on improvements within one month. No penalty was imposed in this case, only a warning was issued.

2. January 2026:
The DCGA imposed a record fine of ₹222 million (approximately $2.2 billion) on IndiGo for the cancellation and delay of thousands of flights between December 2025 and December 2026. The investigation found serious deficiencies in operational planning, crew management, and regulatory preparedness. The DCGA also demanded a bank guarantee of ₹500 million (approximately $5 billion) from the airline to prevent a similar situation from recurring.

3. In October 2025,
the DCGA imposed a fine of ₹2 million on IndiGo for deficiencies in pilot training and Category C airport operations. The airline later stated it would challenge the order.

4. During the December 2025
flight cancellation crisis, the DGCA issued show-cause notices to senior officials of IndiGo, including its CEO. The airline's flights were also monitored closely, officials were deployed at airports and operations control centers, and regular reports were sought from the company. This action later led to a fine of ₹22.20 crore.

What impact does this have on passenger safety?
Adherence to safety regulations is considered crucial in the aviation sector. Especially with dangerous goods, even minor negligence in the proper identification, packaging, and transportation of goods can pose a significant risk. The DGCA continuously monitors airlines to ensure there are no lapses in passenger safety regulations. The warning issued to IndiGo is part of this monitoring.
