8th Pay Commission: Several pay levels may be merged under the 8th Pay Commission, benefiting employees

Central employees are eagerly awaiting the 8th Pay Commission. The expectations of millions of central employees and pensioners across the country are steadily rising. The Commission is currently in the process of gathering suggestions from various employee organizations, unions, and other stakeholders. Meanwhile, the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery, the largest employee organization, has presented a proposal to  the government that, if implemented, could significantly alter the salary and promotion systems of millions of employees.

What are the proposals?
According to media reports, this proposal seeks to integrate pay levels. Employee unions believe that the current system includes several pay levels with minimal pay differences, but significant differences exist between employees in terms of position and salary. This creates long-term dissatisfaction and impacts the pace of promotions.

Employees will benefit
Approximately 10 million people are expected to benefit from the Commission's recommendations. NC-JCM has demanded major changes in the pay structure, saying that the current pay matrix should be simplified. The organization says that Level 2 and Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5, Level 7 and Level 8, and Level 9 and Level 10 should be converted into a single combined pay scale. The employee organization argues that the work of employees at these levels is nearly identical, and the actual pay difference is not significant. Despite this, having different pay levels creates a sense of inequality and frustration among employees. If these levels are merged, the pay structure could become more simple, transparent, and equitable.
