8th Pay Commission: Big news for central government employees! How much will their salaries increase?

The Eighth Pay Commission has been a topic of discussion among employees and pensioners for a long time. Now, the commission's work has reached a crucial stage. High expectations are being placed on this commission, which was established to gather information on salaries, pensions, allowances, and other benefits. The commission was officially established on November 3, 2025, under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The commission has been given 18 months to submit its recommendations, with half of this timeframe completed by August 2026.

The Eighth Pay Commission has begun discussions and meetings with employee unions, pensioner organizations, and individual employees across the country over the past few months. Memoranda have been received from employee unions in various states and union territories, and suggestions and demands are being studied.

An important milestone in the work of the Eighth Pay Commission has now been cleared. The central government established the Eighth Pay Commission on January 16, 2025. Subsequently, the Union Cabinet approved the Commission's Terms of Reference on October 28, 2025. The Commission was officially established on November 3, 2025.

Additionally, central employees and pensioners are particularly focused on the fitment factor. The fitment factor is a crucial factor in determining salary increases. The Sixth Pay Commission had a fitment factor of 1.86, while the Seventh Pay Commission increased it to 2.57. This year, employee organizations such as the BPMS and NC-JCM have demanded that the fitment factor be set at 3.5 or higher. However, the Commission will make this decision after carefully considering all financial aspects, suggestions from employee organizations, and the government's financial situation.

Currently, the Commission is in the process of gathering and discussing information at various levels, and it is expected that the final recommendations will be submitted to the central government by mid-2026. Following the Commission's recommendations, significant changes are likely to occur in the salaries, pensions, and allowances of central government employees and pensioners.
