The River Ganges
River Ganga, originating from Gaumukh in the Himalayas and flowing towards the Bay of Bengal, is the most sacred river of India and the longest river in India. The river has been declared the “National River” of India and the Ganges dolphin has also been declared the national aquatic animal of India. There would be very few people who would not be aware of the religious importance of the river Ganga. Even today, people from India as well as abroad come here from thousands of kilometers to take a holy bath in the river Ganga. It is said that one gets freedom from sins just by seeing the river Ganga, so imagine how important bathing in the river Ganga would be. It is also believed that by immersing the ashes in the river Ganga, the soul of a deceased person reaches heaven. Allahabad, Varanasi, is the holiest city situated on the banks of the river Ganga. The holy aarti of Ganga ji is also performed every day from the banks of Varanasi in which a large number of devotees participate.
Narmada River
Narmada river has great religious importance. Originating from Amarkantak place of Mahakal mountain, the Narmada River flows towards the west and joins the Gulf of Khambhat. Narmada River flows in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and even today special worship of Narmada River is done in Madhya Pradesh. According to religious beliefs, circumambulating the Narmada River frees one from sins and attains salvation after death. Narmada River is also known as "Rewa River". In India, the Narmada River is also given the status of mother. The length of the Narmada River is 1312 kilometers.
Yamuna River
The Yamuna River is a major river of the Indian subcontinent, rising as Yamunotri in the Himalayan Mountains and joining the Ganges at Triveni Sangam, Allahabad. It is one of the holiest rivers of the country on whose banks Gokul and Mathura are the holiest cities. Its origin place Yamunotri also remains the center of faith of the devotees where devotees from different corners of the country come to see Yamuna Devi and take a holy bath. Tons, Chambal and Giri Rivers are important tributaries of Yamuna, Mandakini River is the last tributary of Yamuna River before joining the Ganga at Allahabad. The famous Taj Mahal is also located in Agra on the banks of the sacred Hindu river Yamuna.
Kaveri River
Kaveri is the most important river in the South. Originating from the Brahmagiri Mountains, the Kaveri River flows through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and joins the Bay of Bengal. Kaveri is considered the most sacred river in South India. Kaveri is also called the "Ganga of South India". The main pilgrimage place of Hindus, "Tiruchirappalli" is situated on the banks of river Kaveri. Kaveri River is also given the status of mother in India. The length of the Kaveri River is about 800 kilometers.
Saraswati River
Saraswati is an ancient river also mentioned in the Vedas, which flowed in northern India during the Vedic era. However, today that ancient river no longer exists physically, lost somewhere in the desert. Saraswati River, one of the most sacred rivers of India, originates from the Shivalik mountain range, Himalayas and meets at Triveni Sangam. Triveni Sangam in Allahabad is the confluence of 3 rivers, one of these three is the Saraswati River from which the purity of this river can be estimated. Often the names of Ganga, Yumna, and Saraswati are taken top among the most sacred rivers of India.
Shipra River
Shipra River is another major river flowing in Madhya Pradesh which is considered one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism. The holy city of Ujjain situated on its right bank is famous for one of the twelve famous Jyotirlingas in India known as Mahakaleshwar. Every 12 years, the Kumbh Mela festival takes place in Ujjain during which lakhs of people take a sacred dip and bathe in the sacred river Shipra. This holy river originates from a place called Kakari Badli in Ujjaini Mundla village of Indore and joins the Chambal River. The length of this river in India is 195 km.
