Lonavala and Khandala
Lonavala and nearby Khandala are twin hill stations 622 m (2,041 ft) above sea level, in the Sahyadri range that borders the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan Coast. The hill stations are spread over an approximate area of 38 square kilometers (15 sq mi). Tourism is at its peak during the monsoon season. The name Lonavala is derived from two words 'leni' meaning caves and 'avali' meaning chain. meaning 'a chain of caves' which is a reference to several caves near Lonavala such as Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, and Bedsa. A visit to Lonavala and Khandala can be combined with a sightseeing tour of the Karla, Bhaja, and Bedsa caves and the two forts of Lohagad.

Igatpuri
Igatpuri is surrounded by the highest peaks of Sahyadri i.e. Western Ghats, most of them are forts built in the Satavahana dynasty. It is heavenly for trekkers and hikers, most of the Indian (Hindi) movie exterior scenes especially songs are shot in the Igatpuri area. Igatpuri is an important place from the point of view of Vipassana practice. The International Center for Vipassana Meditation called Dhammagiri, believed to be the largest Vipassana center, is located here. This area includes the mountains which are accessible by trains from Mumbai CST to Kasara and Igatpuri. Local trains run only up to Kasara and do not board the Thal Ghat from Kasara to Igatpuri. So to reach Igatpuri one has to either take a long-distance train or take a suburban train to reach Kasara and then catch a bus to climb up.
