If you have ever traveled by air, then you will notice that the plane does not land until the clearance is received at the airport or the weather is not clear. Landing the aircraft is in the hands of the pilot and it is his job which he does very easily. But some airports in the world are very dangerous and landing a plane here is like risking life. One of these airports is also included in India. So let's know about these dangerous airports of the world.
Leh, India
The world's 23rd-highest airport has been built in Leh. You might not be surprised to hear this. The airport is at an altitude of about 10,682 feet above sea level. Surrounded by mountains with a short runway, this airport is extremely risky. Winds are very strong in the afternoon, so the flight can land only in the morning. Second, heavy aircraft cannot go here. Pilots have to take special training before going there.
Paro, Bhutan
Paro is the only international airport in Bhutan, which is built at an altitude of about 7,364 feet above sea level. So far only a few pilots have got permission to go there. Aircraft can be landed here only in good visible condition. Due to the lack of radar here, a manual approach should be taken. Mountains and houses also have to be taken care of before landing on the runway.
London, UK
Air travel over the UK capital London has become uncommon these days. But when a plane passes over this city, the skyscrapers and the pier of Cannery Wharf are very close. Aircraft land on the runway with a very steep angle. Here you will feel like landing in a helicopter.
Reagan National Airport, USA
When a Frontier Airlines plane skidded off the runway at Ronald Reagan in DC in June 2021, a passenger described it as terrifying. Here a sharp turn is made for landing on the runway near the Potomac River, which sometimes makes it difficult for the pilot.
Innsbruck, Austria
Surrounded by mountains, the capital of Tyrol is a top skiing destination and is special for flights. There are different challenges for the pilots flying the aircraft here. Aircraft landing on the runway have to be brought down from an altitude of about 8,000 feet in line with the nose. The winds hitting the mountains and their directions also have to be taken care of.
Lukla, Nepal
Mountains all around, biting winds, and short runways, all these things make this airport of Nepal dangerous. Sometimes it is also called the most dangerous airport in the world. Its runway is laid on a rock between the mountains, which is only 1,729 feet in length. There is a deep ditch in front of the runway. This runway is slightly raised from the front side to slow down the speed of the planes.
St. Helena
Due to the strong wind and being a cliffside airport, passengers feel jolts during landing here. So when landing, keep an eye out for views of Longwood Plain from where Napoleon was dropped. The runway was initially designed for small aircraft only but was later extended for the Boeing 757.
Madeira, Portugal
Those who have been on vacation to Madera will know that this place is very infamous for the landing of ships. Many times planes do not land here because of the dangers. Due to being adjacent to high places, the direction of bitter winds here often makes it difficult. This can prove fatal at the time of landing.
Sint Maarten, Caribbean
You don't have to look very hard to find videos of planes landing on Sint Maarten. Social media is abuzz with footage of planes landing at Caribbean airports. Its runway is built right behind the beach, so planes fly right over the heads of beachgoers. People enjoy seeing this, but it is very dangerous. In 2017, a woman had also died here due to a blast in an aircraft engine. The woman was hanging on the fins of the airport wearing a swimsuit like all the tourists there.
Congonhas, Brazil
There was a drainage problem at São Paulo's domestic airport. Due to this, an accident also happened in the year 2007. To rectify this, work was resumed on the runway. Although landing the plane here is still not an easy task. It is a single runway right in the heart of the city which was started in 1930. When landing, planes roar over the roofs of nearby apartment blocks and houses.
