The description of the Sarangnath temple is found in the Kashi Yatra of the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang. It is believed that Lord Shiva resides in this temple for a month in the month of Shravan. Devotees throng here because of the recognition of Jalabhishek in the month of Shravan.
Religious History of the Temple
According to the legends, after the marriage of Lord Shiva to Parvati, the wife of the Himalayas, Maina, was pained that her daughter got married to a yogi. On Teej, she sent her daughter to Kashi along with her son Sarang by loading gold on five mules along with various things. When Sarang stayed at Sarnath to rest, he fell asleep due to fatigue. He saw in his dream that the entire Kashi city was made of gold. He was also angry that he was going to insult Lord Shiva. To repent for his mistake, Sarang started doing penance in the forest. Lord Shiva carefully observed that Sarang was engrossed in penance. Lord Shiva told Parvati about Sarang's penance. Lord Shiva and Parvati reached that place and said to Sarang I am happy with you, ask us for a boon. Sarang said on this that God has to give me something, then promise that he will come every year in the month of Shravan and give darshan here. On this, Lord Shiva promised that every year in the month of Shravan, he would come here and rest with Parvati.
