Why is it called the stepwell of thieves?
There is a popular story of thieves related to this stepwell. It is believed that there was a thief who, whenever he stole something, would go and hide in this stepwell. Whenever the villagers chased him, he would run and jump into this stepwell and disappear.
There is a well in the stepwell in which one has to descend 101 steps to go inside. People keep searching for him, but no one finds him. It is believed that even today the treasure is hidden here. It is also said about this stepwell that it is as big from the inside as it is from the outside. However, there is no information available in history regarding this stepwell.
History of Stepwell
It was built by SaiduKalal in 1658-59 AD. It was built by the Subedar of Mughal king Shahjahan. Earlier there were rooms in this stepwell, but now it had become like a dilapidated building. There is a well here, whose water is dark black.
Apart from this, it is also said about this place that there is a network of underground tunnels here, which goes to Lahore in Pakistan. After the severe flood in 1995, a large part of the stepwell was destroyed. The stairs are guarded by bats day and night.

This stepwell is in the city of Rohtak. Meham is a tehsil located in Rohtak district. National Highway 9, which was earlier NH-10, is located here. There is a stop between Delhi and Sirsa. Here you can see 'Waterfall of Heaven' written on the stones.
