Ashtamudi Lake

It is also known as the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Ashtamudi Lake is the second largest lake in Kerala and is spread over 1700 sq km. The lake is said to be home to about 100 species of fish and about 60 avifauna species. There are coconut palms lining the shores of the lake and palm trees extending into towns and villages. Many islands can be visited here through a houseboat cruise. This lake is quite popular among honeymoon couples.

Periyar Lake

The Periyar Lake, formed after the construction of a dam on the Mullaperiyar River in 1895, is certainly very beautiful. Here tourists enjoy seeing the wildlife through boat rides. The shores of the beautiful Periyar Lake are known as the place where animals come to quench their thirst.

Vellayani Lake

If you are going to Kovalam, you must also visit Vellayani Lake. This freshwater lake is just 9 km from Trivandrum. The water of the lake is so clear that it shines like a mirror on moonlit nights. It is said that this lake was formed when a beggar asked for water from a meditating saint. Boat races are held here during Onam. Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake is the largest lake in Kerala. It is one of the most popular lakes in Kerala. About 15 km from Kottayam, it is the longest lake in India. Spread over 200 square km, this lake is a major confluence of many rivers. Vembanad is also known for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. This lake is also quite famous for houseboat cruises, fishing and bird watching.
