Other members of the monitoring committee include Olympic medalist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former shuttler Trupti Murgunde, former TOPS CEO Rajagopalan, and former Sports Authority of India (SAI) executive director (teams) Radhika Sriman.
Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik during a protest against the Wrestling Federation of India, in New Delhi on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom will head a five-member monitoring committee set up to probe allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Braj Bhushan Sharan Singh. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur made this announcement on 23 January 2023. Let us tell you that Mary Kom has been involved in controversies regarding the current world champion Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen.
On the other hand, a petition has been filed by a person named Vicky seeking a direction to register an FIR in the Delhi High Court against the protesting wrestlers who have accused Braj Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. However, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has denied that any petition has been filed on his behalf.
The petition claims that on January 18, six wrestlers and several others gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and started protesting against the resignation of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The petition claimed that the wrestlers never made any complaint. The allegations leveled by him are baseless and completely fabricated. It is very shameful that there is no provision like section 509 of IPC to take action against those who outrage the dignity of men, that too on a public platform.
In a tweet on Monday on Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's official Twitter handle, it said, "No petition has been filed by me or any authorized person associated with me against Delhi government, protesting wrestlers and news channels." I have not authorized any advocate, legal agency, or representative to represent the petition in any court.
It has also been said in the tweet, therefore, all media are requested not to telecast any unconfirmed and unverified news. At present, considering the sensitivity and seriousness of the subject, everyone is requested not to create a ruckus by promoting any rumor or misleading facts.
The monitoring committee will also look after the day-to-day working of WFI for the next month. Other members of the panel include Olympic medalist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, former TOPS CEO Rajagopalan, and former Sports Authority of India (SAI) executive director (team) Radhika Sriman.
Anurag Thakur decided to set up the committee late on Friday, January 20, 2023, after a three-day strike by the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Ravi Dahiya against the WFI and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
