WhatsApp for Android is reportedly testing a new feature for its recently added artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Meta AI. According to a feature tracker claim, the feature will allow users to send voice messages to the chatbot. Meta AI is also said to be capable of replying to messages, albeit in text format. The feature is reportedly being rolled out to a small group of beta testers. WhatsApp may roll it out to a larger user base in the coming weeks.

According to a post by WABetaInfo, the voice message feature for Meta AI was spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.16.10 for Android. After its rollout, those who have registered for the Google Play beta program will be able to tap on the Meta AI button to access the chat interface and see a new voice message icon.

This icon is similar to the icons seen on other chats and groups and is placed next to the text field at the bottom. According to the feature tracker, this will allow users to send voice messages to the Meta AI. The AI will be able to process the audio and understand the query. It will then generate a text response. Gadgets 360 staff members were unable to spot its availability on the WhatsApp beta app for Android.

This feature could be useful in situations where users cannot type a long question. This can be used while on the go, where the user cannot constantly focus on the phone for typing. Interestingly, the Meta AI was always multimodal and could generate images, but audio generation or processing has not been added to it until now. This update could eventually change that.
