Many islands in the world are uninhabited. But no one wants to live on a coral island called Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Because it is the most nuclear-contaminated island in the world. Everyone who visits this island is on the verge of death. This is because it was used by the US as a test site for atomic bombs.

World War II ended with Japan dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But after this America did many more nuclear tests. Bikini Atoll is an island in the Marshall Islands. It is an area of two square km. This island was best for the army. According to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the area is too far from shipping lanes. The base was only 1600 km away from where the bombers could take off.

America did 23 nuclear explosions
The population of the island was very small. Only 167 people lived here. The US military said in a statement that the tests were "very important" to prevent future wars. At first, the people were not ready to leave from here, but later King Judah, the leader of these people said that they will leave from here, everything is in the hands of God. The United States conducted 23 nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll between 1946 and 1958, including 20 hydrogen bombs.

Islanders were allowed to return
In one of these tests, the bomb was a thousand times more powerful than the one that destroyed Nagasaki. Stephen Palumbi, a professor at Stanford University who visited the Atoll island in 2017, estimated that debris from the bombings could reach more than 65 km into the sky. In the 1960s, the US Atomic Energy Commission declared Bikini Atoll habitable and allowed some of the island's older residents to return. But this step proved dangerous.

Not worth going back
A decade later, the decision was reversed. Because the study found that the level of cesium-137 in the body of the people who came back here increased by 75%. Simply put, his body was exposed to radiation. Cesium can cause many diseases in the body, which can even lead to death. Scientists say that it is still not a good option to return. The island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 for detonating the atomic bombs.
