Chandrashekhar Gaur, a Right to Information activist from Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh, had sought information from the Reserve Bank of India under the Right to Information that the total number of branches of public banks have been closed in the last two financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22.

According to details provided by Right to Information activist Gaur in May 2022, the details provided by the Reserve Bank for the financial year 2021-22 show that nine branches have been completely closed this year, while 2,557 branches have been merged. Huh.
