Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also contributing to the field of medicine. Recently a new research has been published in 'The Lancet Oncology Journal' which is on the achievement of AI. Eye-assisted mammography screening detected one-fifth more breast cancers than standard screening, according to this research. AI's ability to detect cancer has cut the screen reading workload for radiologists in half.

Level cancer screening made easy with AI-powered mammograms
A Swedish university-led study found that the use of AI-assisted mammograms reduces the choice of two radiologists and can replace one. This will make the process of screening for breast tumors more efficient.

80000 women check
For this study, screening reports of 80000 Swedish women aged 40-80 years were studied in the screening program. The researchers attempted the test using an AI-assisted mammogram reading system. Half of the women in the study received a standard screening protocol and the other half received an AI-assisted protocol.

AI-assisted screening found cancer in 28% of 244 women, while standard screening resulted in cancer in 25% of women (203 women). In comparison, the AI detected cancer in 41 more women.

The standard method of cancer screening
Breast screening is done using mammography to detect cancer. Mammograms are studied by two doctors, called radiologists.

If the test shows any abnormality, it is sent for further testing in the Breast Screen Evaluation Clinic. The entire process can take about five months, which can be reduced with the help of AI-assisted mammograms, reducing the radiologist's time. Typically: A radiologist can perform 50 mammography exams in one hour. However, the AI was found to be unable to provide a risk score comparable to standard care ie double reading.
