When Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook's parent company Meta, appeared at a congressional hearing to answer the question how does social media potentially harm children? So Zuckerberg started by saying that the scientific body has not shown even a casual relationship between the use of social media and the deteriorating mental health of youth.
However many social scientists do not agree with this answer. Studies conducted in recent years have started finding links between teenagers' use of social media and poor health, mood disorders, depression, and anxiety.
Study revealed
This study is based on data collected on the mental health of students during the early years of Facebook. According to this, turning on Facebook in college hurts the mental health of the students. It also increased the likelihood that students experienced declines in academics due to poor mental health.
Teenage girls are more at risk
A new study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health shows that social media is linked to mental health issues – but only in certain circumstances, and only for certain people. In girls, frequent social-media use harms health, but only when it causes cyberbullying or inadequate sleep and exercise. However, there is no evidence that these factors have the same effect on boys.
It is important to prevent depression
To prevent depression, you must stay away from all those things which cause you anxiety. If you get carried away thinking that people of your age are happier or doing better in life than you on social media, then use social media as little as possible. Also, following a healthy and balanced lifestyle can make you mentally strong and healthy.
