Dandiya and Garba are organized to celebrate the festival of Shardiya Navratri with more enthusiasm. Especially in Gujarat, people of all ages and classes dance to the tune of dandiya, but now Garba and Dandiya are organized with great pomp in almost every part of the country. This unique tradition of dance and music works to connect people.
Feet plays as much role in Garba and Dandiya as hand claps or dandiya. Correct footwork makes the dance even more beautiful. Therefore, rehearsal classes are often organized before this nine-day festival so that newcomers can also learn the art of Garba and Dandiya. It is not only a means of entertainment but also a good exercise. However, sometimes people dance with enthusiasm but ignore the health of their feet, which can lead to problems like pain, swelling, or fractures. In such a situation, take some precautions.
Some tips to avoid injury while playing Garba
Warm-up
Before starting Garba, warm up to stretch the muscles so that the risk of injury is reduced. Pay special attention to your legs, hips, and back as these parts are most active during dancing.
Wear comfortable shoes
Wear flat and comfortable shoes with support while playing Garba or Dandiya. Avoid wearing high heels to reduce the risk of falling or injury. Use bands to protect the hands.
Do stretching
Stretching makes the muscles flexible. Stretching exercises strengthen the feet, so that you can do every step of Dandiya easily and enjoy the dance without getting tired.
Methods of stretching
Touching the toes
This is normal stretching but do it as much as the body feels flexible. Do not force it. For this, sit in a flat place and keep your legs straight. Now bend the upper part of the body and try to touch the toes with both hands.
Yoga
To increase the flexibility of the body, you can practice two types of yoga asanas, which will also give relief to the feet on Dandiya and Garba nights.
The first is Chair Pose, which is called Utkatasana, start practicing it from now. In this asana, bring the body in such a position as if you sit on a chair.
The second is Virabhadrasana Yoga, in this, by moving one leg forward, bending the knee slightly, and raising the hands.
Other exercises
Apart from stretching, you can also make the legs strong and flexible by activities like brisk walking, cycling, and rope jumping daily.
Give rest to the feet.
It is important to take breaks in between stretching and exercise so that the feet can get rest. Also, adding salt to the feet in lukewarm water and dipping them for some time will give relief.
Consult a doctor
If you are suffering from any health problem like arthritis, diabetes, or being overweight, then consult a doctor before playing Garba.
By adopting these precautions and measures, you can enjoy Garba and Dandiya to the fullest, and take care of your health along with dancing.
