The mythology of Maa Shailputri Temple

The mythology of this holy temple is very interesting. Yes, there is an ancient story about this temple that Mother Shailputri once came from Kailash city and settled in Kashi.

When Maa Shailputri was in Kashi, Lord Shiva reached Kashi to celebrate her. Even after trying a lot, Shailputri did not agree and she said that this place is very dear and I do not want to go from here.

On not persuading Shailputri, Lord Shiva left her in Kashi and since then mother Shailputri settled in Kashi.

Significance of Maa Shailputri Temple

This temple is so special for the devotees of the mother that people from far and wide reach offer things like red chunari, red flowers etc. and ask for their wishes. It is said that if anyone performs a Yagya here during Navratri, all his wishes are fulfilled.

It is said that most married women reach this temple and ask for the long life of the husband as well as wishes for the family. Another folk tale is that this is one such temple of Kashi where the aarti of Maa Durga is performed three times.

A mother born in the lap of the Himalayas is also known by many other names besides Shailputri. It is said that the vehicle of the mother is Vrishabha, hence she is also known as Vrisharudha Devi. Apart from this, Maa Shailputri is also popular with the name Sati, Parvati and Hemvati Devi.

  • Getting to Varanasi is very easy. Here one can reach any part of India by train from any city like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi etc.
  • You can easily reach the temple by taking a taxi or cab from Varanasi Railway Station. It is at a distance of about 4 km from the city centre.
  • If you want to reach Maa Shailputri Temple by air, then the nearest is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.
