On 26 January 1961, Queen Elizabeth II of England and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited the forests of Ranthambore on a royal hunt.
Hunting is banned
One of the most interesting facts about Ranthambore National Park is that tiger hunting was completely banned by the Government of India until 1971. The Wildlife Protection Act was enacted in 1972. It is estimated that there were a total of 1074 tigers from 1929 to 1939. They were hunted in the forests of Rajasthan. In 1973, Project Tiger was launched and the SawaiMadhopur Wildlife Sanctuary was incorporated as the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve.
