Over the years, we have heard about many types of scams, but something is going on in Nigeria, which will force you to think for once that this can also happen. We are talking about the cryptic pregnancy scam going on in Nigeria, in which those women are duped, who want to get pregnant and are worried about it for a long time. In this scam, which is going on rapidly in Nigeria, the scammers target those women who are unable to have children and are troubled due to social pressures. BBC Nigeria reported that scammers tell those women about a special treatment and cheat them of money. Let us know what this scam is and how it works?
What is the Cryptic Pregnancy Scam?
BBC Africa shared a report and told that a disturbing pregnancy scam has come to light in Anambra State of Nigeria. Many women have been trapped in this and they have also spent hundreds of dollars for this treatment. In this scam, those women are asked to fake pregnancy. Let's know how this scam works?
The scam came to light after the BBC spoke to a woman who carried her baby for 15 months after receiving treatment at the 'clinic'. This timeline raised concerns among health officials and her family. The scam was then discovered.
The BBC reported that scammers pretend to be doctors or nurses and tell women struggling with infertility about miraculous treatments that cost hundreds of dollars, often involving injections, liquids or materials that are inserted into the body.
These injections or materials cause visible physical changes like swelling in the abdomen of the women, which makes the women think that they are pregnant. Apart from this, these scammers discourage the women from going to any other doctor because they are told that no medical test or scan can detect the baby. The scammers claim that their baby is growing outside the womb.
How is fake delivery done?
When the time of delivery comes, the women are asked to pay for an expensive and rare medicine for labour pains. These women, who want their child, fall into this trap. After this, they are made unconscious and wake up with a scar similar to a caesarean incision. Apart from this, the scammers give some an injection which makes them hallucinate and they think that they are giving birth. Later, a child is handed over to them and they think that they have given birth to it.
How much do scammers charge?
Initially, scammers charge 350,000 naira i.e. about Rs 17300 in the name of the first treatment of this pregnancy. At the same time, about 1.5 to 2 million naira i.e. about Rs 99,702 is charged in the name of expensive medicine for labor pain. Now the question arises that where do those children come from, who are handed over to these women. The report said that scammers look for newborn babies and women who are underage, pregnant and weak. Let us tell you that abortion is not legal in Nigeria. In such a situation, some women who cannot tell their family about it, their child is bought from them by giving them money. At the same time, some women are deceived and their child is taken away from them.
