What is the importance of Pitru Paksha?
Pitru Paksha has special importance in the Hindu religion. This period is considered dedicated to the ancestors. During this time, Tarpan, Shraddha rituals and Pind Daan are performed for the ancestors due to which the ancestors attain salvation. At the same time, ancestors keep a compassionate eye on their family members. The duration of Pitru Paksha is considered to be at least 15 days. There is a reason behind this also.
In fact, according to Hindu beliefs, it is believed that after death, Yamraj frees the soul of the deceased for 15 days, so that he can go to his family members and receive tarpan and give them his blessings. After this, as soon as 15 days are completed, the ancestors take their part and return back to heaven on the last day of Pitru Paksha i.e. Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha. Therefore the duration of Pitru Paksha is considered to be 15 days.
