The Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to link a PAN card with Aadhaar. According to the advisory of the government, if both identity cards are not linked before March 31, 2023, the PAN card will become inactive. As a result of which you will be banned from filing Income Tax Returns or accessing PAN-related services.
PAN-Aadhaar linking is necessary
The public advisory issued by the I-T department states that as per the I-T Act, it is mandatory for all PAN-holders who do not fall under the exempted category. Therefore it is mandatory to link your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar before March. 31, 2023. From April 1, 2023, the unlinked PAN will become inoperative.
You can check your Aadhaar and PAN linking status online and through SMS. You can follow these steps to check whether your PAN and Aadhaar are linked or not.
How to link a PAN card with an Aadhaar card?
If your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you can link them through SMS or online. To link your PAN with your Aadhaar through SMS, send an SMS to either 567678 or 56161 using your registered phone number.
You can link your PAN with your Aadhaar online by visiting the Income Tax portal and paying the applicable late fee of Rs 1000.
How to link your pan card with your aadhaar card online
First of all visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India: incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
Register your ID if you haven't already registered.
Now login to the portal using your User ID, Password, and Date of Birth. The user ID to log in will be your PAN (Permanent Account Number).
You will see a pop-up window to link your PAN with your Aadhaar.
To link, go to 'Profile Settings' on the menu bar and click on 'Link Aadhaar' on the homepage.
Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and your name as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
Tick the box "I have only year of birth on my Aadhaar card" if applicable.
Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen to verify.
Now click on the "Link Aadhaar" button.
If the details entered by you match your PAN and Aadhaar records, click on the "Link Now" button. Your PAN card will be successfully linked with your Aadhaar card.
After a successful linking process, a pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked with your PAN.
