We touch our hands many times throughout the day, from the face to other parts of the body, but do you know that millions of microorganisms live under your beautiful nails? Research has shockingly revealed that 32 different types of bacteria and 28 different types of fungus are found under the nails.
This research was done in 2021 and was published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Researchers took samples from under the nails and examined them, in which they found 32 types of bacteria and 28 types of fungus. Of these, 50% of the samples contained only bacteria, 6.3% contained only fungus, and 43.7% contained a mixed group of bacteria and fungus.
Research done on toenails
Although this study was done on toenails, its reports are becoming a topic of discussion everywhere regarding the need to pay attention to the cleanliness of nails. After all, we use our hands for everything, whether it's eating, blowing our nose, or hugging someone. In such a situation, cleanliness of nails is not only important for our beauty, but is also very important for our health.
What do researchers say?
Researchers say that the bacteria and fungus found under the nails are usually harmless. However, in some cases, these microorganisms can cause infection in people with weak immunity or who have any injury or infection in the nails. Symptoms of infection may include discoloration of the nails, swelling, pain, and discharge of pus.
